TRANSPORT MINISTER PAYS WORKING VISIT TO DVLA

The Minister for Transport, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has embarked on a working visit to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to engage with its leadership and familiarize himself with operations at the Authority. During the visit to the Authority’s Head Office, the Minister met with the Chief Executive and Management team to discuss ongoing initiatives and strategies aimed at improving service delivery.

As part of the visit, the Minister touched on key national transport issues, including the regularization of commercial motorcycle operations, popularly known as 'Okada,' and the government's vision for a 24-hour economy. His visit, he said, marked the beginning of a series of engagements aimed at advancing the government's transport sector agenda.

“This is our first working visit and today’s meeting sets the foundation for our objectives. The Government intends to regularise the commercialisation of Okada. If properly regulated, it will provide a safe and efficient means of transportation, allowing people to enjoy a smoother journey to work”, he said. Noting that with the right training and monitoring, Okada operations can contribute significantly to productivity in the long run.

The Minister assured the Chief Executive of the Ministry’s unwavering support to achieve government’s objectives. “Our role is crucial in ensuring that all necessary revenues are collected and must strive to make a positive impact wherever we serve,” He stated.

He called for total support to the Chief Executive, saying that with the right backing, the economy could thrive. “If we provide our Chief Executive with the necessary support, we can sustain economic activity and growth. It is the President’s vision to ensure safer roads, as Ghana is the gateway to Africa. Both the Ministry and the Presidency are fully committed to supporting this initiative.”

The Minister urged the management and staff of DVLA to rally behind the Chief Executive at working towards a "better Ghana" agenda, emphasing that government’s plan to implement a 24-hour economy while encouraging DVLA to align its strategies with this broader national goal. The Minister and his entourage also visited the Greater Accra Regional Office at Narhaman, in the Ga East Municipality, where he engaged with the Regional Manager and interacted with staff.  He took the opportunity to interact with clients and gathered feedback from customers and assured them of government’s commitment to improving public service efficiency.

Mr. Nikpe highlighted the significance of innovation and digital transformation in public service delivery. He commended DVLA’s efforts at leveraging on modern technologies to streamline operations and enhance customer satisfaction. He also urged the Management and staff to uphold high service standards by ensuring that the Authority remains a leader in the transport sector.

The Chief Executive, Mr. Julius Neequaye Kotey expressed gratitude for the Minister’s visit and reiterated the Authority’s commitment to continuous improvement. He assured the Minister that DVLA would continue to explore innovative ways to provide seamless service for clients across the country. Mr. Kotey stated that the visit represents a significant milestone in enhancing cooperation between the Ministry of Transport and DVLA, as they work together to achieve excellence in public service and transportation management.
