The Minister of Transport, Hon.
Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has officially inaugurated the Board of the Driver and
Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), highlighting their crucial role in ensuring
that vehicles that ply the roads are roadworthy while drivers are properly
qualified.
Mr. Nikpe recounted the evolution
of the Authority from its beginnings as a department within the Ghana Police
Service to its establishment as a modern regulatory body under Act 569 of 1999.
He challenged the new Board to position the Authority to keep pace with
advancements in transport technologies, such as electric and autonomous
vehicles.
“As a Board, your core
responsibility is to ensure the effective implementation of the Authority’s
mandate,” he stated. “I urge you to collaborate closely with Management to
ensure that DVLA’s operations not only reflect current developments but also
set new benchmarks in driver licensing, vehicle registration and road safety
compliance.”
He also urged the Board to
support the implementation of initiatives in line with Government’s 24-Hour
Economy policy. He noted that the Authority had already launched 24-hour
operations at its Adenta office and expressed hope that other offices would
follow suit to enhance service accessibility and service delivery.
Cautioning against overreach,
the Minister reminded the Board to respect the Authority’s governance
structure, which requires the Board to report to the Ministry and refrain from
assuming management roles.
