The
Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has officially launched its new
initiative, dubbed Lorry Terminal Project at the Circle Kaneshie Station, a
groundbreaking initiative aimed at bringing essential DVLA services directly to
commercial drivers at transport terminals.
The
launch, which was undertaken by the Chief Executive of the DVLA, Mr. Julius
Neequaye Kotey and the Board Chairman of the DVLA, Mr. George Spencer Quaye had
members of DVLA management, executives of the GPRTU and representatives of
other driver unions, drivers and media personnel in attendance.
In his
address, Mr. Kotey described the project as a significant milestone in DVLA’s
mission to decentralize its operations and ensure that all drivers —
particularly those in the informal transport sector — have easier access to
licensing services.
“This
initiative is about bringing our services to the doorsteps of our clients,
especially drivers who have traditionally found it difficult to engage with
DVLA at our main offices,” Mr. Kotey said.
The DVLA
Lorry Terminal Project will allow commercial drivers to initiate and complete
various licensing processes from within their terminals. Services offered
include new driver’s licence applications, renewals, replacement for expired or
missing licences, licence upgrades, conversion of foreign driver’s licences,
and issuance of international driver’s permits through the DVLA Express Mobile
Service (DEMOBS).
Mr. Kotey
also emphasized the importance and benefits of the Lorry Terminal Project,
noting that it is part of DVLA’s broader strategy to enhance accessibility,
convenience and compliance within the transport sector. He highlighted several
complementary initiatives by the Authority, including the introduction of the
DP Sticker which comes with insurance coverage from the State Insurance Company
(SIC) Limited; the instant printing of driver’s licences; the rollout of
electronic driver’s licence cards; the establishment of the National DVLA
Skills Development Centre. These efforts, he explained, are all geared towards
modernizing service delivery and promoting professionalism among drivers.
The Board
Chairman of DVLA, Mr. George Spencer Quaye, commended the Chief Executive for
spearheading the Lorry Terminal Project, noting that it aligns with the
Authority’s strategic objectives. He called on stakeholders to fully support
the initiative and take advantage of the services being brought closer to them.
Mr. Quaye also emphasized the importance of collaboration with the driver
unions, extending an invitation for partnership.
“Let us
work together to deliver a better Ghana — one that reflects the regulatory
system we envision. It’s time to transform our relationship into a true
partnership,” he stated.
The event concluded with the official declaration of the project’s launch at the Circle Kaneshie Station, setting the stage for similar deployments at other major transport terminals across the country.
