Chief Executive of the Driver and Vehicle Licencing
Authority (DVLA), Mr. Julius Neequaye Kotey, engaged the Media ahead of the introduction
of the New Vehicle Registration Number Plate.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Kotey emphasized the
initiative's national importance, highlighting its transparent and inclusive
rollout.
He stated that the initiative was expected to enhance
road safety, improve vehicle traceability and ensure data integrity. He added,
that the Authority had engaged key stakeholders to discuss the new system, indicating
that the roll out plan for the new vehicle registration plate system is aimed
at increasing data accuracy, combating fraud and promoting safer roads.
“We urge the media to support the Authority’s public education efforts by collaborating to raise public awareness and promote this important initiative aimed at promoting safety on our roads”. He said.
A detailed presentation by Mr. Kafui Semevo, Director
for Driver Training Testing and Licensing (DTTL), revealed that the new plates
will include: Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) chips for real-time
tracking, QR codes and reflective material for authenticity and visibility, Colour
codes for easy category identification, among others.
The engagement also held an interactive session which addressed key issues such as fees and plate ownership, re-registration of existing vehicles data protection, Ceremonial plates, as well as appointment system and National Identification Authority (NIA) integration.
The Deputy Chief Executive, in charge of Services, Foster Akwasi Asante Esq, on his part, urged the media to lead in public sensitisation as they are the Authority’s strongest partner in driving safer roads. He underscored the importance of the ongoing innovations, referring to them as crucial steps toward boosting revenue and efficiency. He also acknowledged current revenue losses due to the nature of the current processes in registering a Vehicle and acquiring a new number plate but expressed confidence that the changes would enhance income generation.
Expressing gratitude to the media for their
participation, the Deputy Chief Executive urged continued support for the
transformation agenda, assuring that the reforms would ultimately benefit both
DVLA and the general public.
The Authority has set January next year for the
rollout of its new Vehicle Registration Number Plate system while commencing
re-registration of existing vehicles from April 1, 2026.
